able or heavy piece. The initials F. J. engraved into the head of the rivet as well as the casement whose glass cover allowed all and sundry to read them proved the uniqueness of this piece of metal. This rivet survived the explosion of the bridge during World War 1! and even 1956 when, however, it is likely to have been removed by someone taking advantage of the chaos following the revolution. The “collector”, or his descendants, may treasure this outstanding relic of the history of Budapest. The absence of the rivet was only discovered during the reconstruction of the bridge. Tibor Dal- my, the commissioner of the bridge renovations, arranged for a replacement, this time not made of silver, but featuring the same initials and the case.
