The Synagogue in Dózsa György út

The Synagogue in Dózsa György út When plans for a Lipótváros temple fell through, the Angyalföld synagogue was built at the corner of Aréna (Dózsa György) út and Tüzér utca to plans by Lipót Baumhorn in his experimental style. In its ground plan, it is similar to such turn-of-the-century Baumhorn masterworks as the great synagogue of Szeged, although the corner turrets and the external dome are absent here. Despite the smaller proportions, the huge tympani with their rounded-off tops reaching above the tent roof still make a monumental effect viewed from below. The tympani are repeated on a smaller scale by the pedimented gates. The dented cornices decorated with bevelled bricks and the rosettes set in orders of round arches lend a geometric character to the fagades. The wall-plane of the building is articulated by pilaster strips running up from the ground at the corners and rising, on the middle projections, from the first-floor cornice forming the base of the tympani. The walls are covered with yellow bricks except in the pediments where glazed tiles are used. Baumhorn set a red marble tablet between the tops of the tympani and the rows of six windows on each fagade. Inside, the interior dome and the galleries wedged in from three sides rested on four pilasters. Cut in the wall beneath the arches connected with penden- tives to the dome, Miksa Róth's geometrically-divided windows set in sunray auras created a church-like atmosphere. The painting of the arches, the Eastern wall and the central, dome-like ceiling were decorated in accordance with the ■ The synagogue in Dózsa György (Aréna) út 53
