He suggested that a polgár (burgher, citizen) be called városiéi (city neighbour), a polgártárs (Ifellowl citizen) atyafi (brother) and a miniszter (minister) országiár (a neologism meaning something like land-er). Döbrentei was the first to call Frühstück by its current name reggeli (breakfast). He promoted the domestication of dialect words from the Transdanubia and Transylvania regions. It is at his suggestion, for example, that the words kóricál and kujtorog (both meaning to ramble) were incorporated into standard Hungarian. He raised his voice against the use of German shop signs. Széchenyi set such great store by Döbrentei's linguistic wisdom that he invited the latter, among others, to "update” the style of his classic Hitel (Credit).

Döbrentei lies buried in the Kerepesi Cemetery, According to the epitaph on his headstone, "he was among the greatest of Hungarian trailblazers and seed-planters”.
