It was under the editorship of Döbrentei that the magazine Crdélyi Múzeum (Transylvanian Museum) announced the drama-competition into which the great Hungarian dramatist József Katona entered his tragedy Bánk Bán. The play received no response whatsoever but was thereon published in 1820, after which the theatre proceeded, following Bánk Ban’s Kassa and Kolozsvár performances, to stage Katona’s play. This compensatory gesture came too late, however, as the author did not live to see his play performed in Buda. Among those appearing on the stage here were several founding members of the National Theatre, which was opened in 1837. Between 1837 and 1870, the Castle Theatre was rented by German companies.
