Town gas from coal - The Óbuda Gas Works (1913-84)

■ Cover oh a cookery book ("Gai in the Kitchen: Cooking with gai ii child's play!") Not only was gas sold at prices lower in Budapest than in other major European cities, but the Óbuda works itself mounted marketing initiatives to promote new areas of gas consumption among domestic and industrial users alike. With the sales of innovative domestic appliances and the introduction of renting programmes, the factory managed to give a boost to demands for cooking gas, which was followed by the commencement of supplying hot running water to residences and the assembly of gas cookers in the factory's Révész utca plant. Bureaus handling new orders were opened all over the city with the central office located at the fashionable address of 18 Rákóczi út. Posters carried the new slogan: "I use gai with cooking, baking and ironing!” As maintenance of gas-heated appliances was paid for by the gas works, the Gas Apparatus Controllers' Team was formed and supplied with motorized transport from the start to ensure instant response. The women of Budapest flocked to the showrooms in their hundreds to admire model kitchens equipped with the factory’s gas appliances. A special office offering Domestic Advice was opened, and the kitchen appliances were promoted at cookery courses held in the Károlyi Palace from 1929 and at 3 Vilmos császár (today's Bajcsy-Zsilinszky) út from 1933.
