Water Towers

WATER TOWERS There are dozens of towers providing Budapest with fresh drinking water. Follow­ing are the ones of the greatest architectural or historical interest. The water tower of the old National Theatre No. 3 Csokonai utca, District VIII Approaching the busy square called Blaha Lujza tér, one catches sight of a tower conspicuously rising above the blue faqade of the National Hotel. The peculiar ■ The water tower when it wad visible a system of walkways, open-air gyms, bonfire facilities and playgrounds, this wildlife area of 327 hectares has been converted into ideal recreation grounds for city-folk. On one of its promontories at an altitude of 332 metres was built a steel-frame observation tower. Climbing up to its terraces at 4.6 and 12 metre heights, one can have a good view of the surrounding area. To reach the tower, designed in 1983 by the company Agrober—Mezőti, one has to walk down a path flanked by columns com­memorating Hungary's leading natural scientists, writers and conservationists (Péter Beretzk, István Fekete, Ottó Herman, Károly Kaán, and Kálmán Kittenberger). 66
