The foundation stone of the church was laid in 1924, in connection with the golden jubilee mass of János Csernoch. However, construction work only began in 1929. The consecration ceremony was performed by Jusztinján Serédi. The date of the event is inscribed on the portico—Consecrata Anno Dom(ini) MCMXXXI. An impressive motif of this free-standing church building is the colonnade- surrounded, drum-supported dome, which resembles the Esztergom basilica (József Hild, 1845) on a smaller scale. Arching into the pillars of the square carrying the dome are semi-circular exedrae. Beyond a pair of pillars behind the entrance, there are chapels on each side. The sacristy can be approached from towards the chancel on the right, while the pulpit stands on the Evangelical side. The location of the chapels is emphasised by four side-domes on the outside. The cross beams are covered with coffered staves, and the sacristy closes with a semi-circle. The interior supports are covered with malachite-green imi49
