operations in 1923 and, headed by Emánuel Pokorny, assigned a new site for the school, now on the plot neighbouring the one belonging to the school. It was about that time that the designer of the "Minor" Church in Városmajor (City Manor), Aladár Árkay (1868-1932) drew up, free of charge, new designs for the chapel. With the foundations laid in March 1924, the building was completed by 1925. A 1940 brochure introducing the church of the boarding school gives the following description. "Aladár Árkay blended Romanesque and Gothic features with the basilica style in perfect harmony, adding a Hungarian quality to the resulting combination. The Székely portal of the tower on the left, the Hungarian style of the right- hand-side aisle, the Hungarian skylights in the roof provide the building with its national character. The round window of the choir, the rotundity of the chancel and the arches downstairs draw on the Romanesque style for their appearance; the vaults and windows of the gallery, on the other hand, are reminiscent of the Gothic period. The coffered ceiling (painted red and blue, the Rákóczi colours) is a familiar feature of the basilica style. The combination of all that creates a fine balance, and that generates a unique character for the entire church.” ■ View of the chapel írom the weit 38
