The Devil's Ditch: Buda's rapid brook imprisoned
■ The Devit'ä Ditch: outlet into the Danube end if its 1963-64 reconstruction in the spring of 1964. The holes which had appeared at the bottom were repaired in adverse circumstances while the ditch was in operation. A modular replacement ditch which could be moved on rails was built in the tunnel of the canal to conduct sewage across the working areas. A downpour inundated the tunnel, sweeping the trolleys, tools and construction material into the Danube; the "crumbled'' rails got stuck in a bend before the Rác Baths. Luckily no one was hurt. Hidden from sight today, the Devil's Ditch preserves the memories of bygone centuries and millennia. Its underground stream courses peacefully towards its Döbrentei tér estuary where gulls and anglers enliven the scene. >4
