EXCURSIONS AROUND THE TOWN 281 Ipolydamásd ■ Hungarian Grey Cattle by the road between Szob-lpolydamásd In the Middle Ages the village used to be situated about one and a half kilometres farther away, by the Öregdamásd Brook. As a tifc result of an influx of Slovak settlers, the village moved to its Rfl present place by the Ipoly at the turn of the 18-19th centuries. First castle built at the foot of Zuvar Hill at the northern end of the village in 1361 was referred to by the name of Damas. The castle was destroyed in the 17th century during the Ottoman rule. It is the road-crossing on the Hungarian-Slovak frontier, the bridge over the Ipoly is open for both passenger and goods traffic. However, it is not open around the clock. Sights: Classicist Roman Catholic church (1811) • Baroque Immaculate Virgin Mary statue (1707) Programmes: St Stephen's Day (20 August) • Bridge Day of Letkés (August) Statue of the Virgin Mary Roman Catholic church Nagybörzsöny, In the 13th century the estate owner of Nagybörzsöny, the Archbishop of Esztergom, invited German craftsmen to the village in order to exploit the treasures of the mountain. Initially precious metals were mined, but copper, sulphur and iron ore were also brought to surface. The strata of ore ran out in the 18th century. Nagybörzsöny was also famous for its wines as early as the Middle Ages.
