210 SIGHTSEEING Bishop Konstantin | Tombstone of Antal Drobny Schuster's tombstone I Town Judge in the crypt 1940s, its altar has been decorated with a fresco of St Joseph painted by Pál C. Molnár. One of the pictures (a secco), which was removed from here at that time and depicts the entombing of Jesus, is attributed to Maulbertsch. The valuable medieval stone-carvings, inscribed stones and coats of arms that had survived, were built into the walls of the crypt. The Bishopric Cathedral can be visited every day except Friday and Monday afternoons. Croup bookings can be made at the nearby parsonage. The southern side of the square is determined by the building of the Seminary built by Bishop Migazzi between 1777-1783. The idea of the place came from Franz Anton Pilgram. A draft drawing by Emanuel Dummer has survived, and the name of the architect of the bishop's palace, Joseph Meissl, is also associated with it. Builder Oswald and Prebend Würth had already started to have their houses built here. However the premises became more ther enriched by Bishop Konstantin Schuster at the end of the century. In 1900 an important alteration was executed when the passage to the crypt, which had been in the middle of the nave, was walled up and a new entrance was opened outside. The Rococo organ, which had been brought here from the dissolved Pauline Order in Márianosztra, was replaced with a new one in 1904. The fresco of the semi-dome above the high altar was painted by Béla Kontuly during the renovations in 1942. Its subject is the establishment of the bishopric. After the Second World War István Takács painted some frescos in the transept. One of them portrays Bishop Pétery commending the cathedral to St Joseph's protection. The artist alludes to the fact that the church was miraculously saved during the war. Although it was hit by two missiles neither of them exploded. The crypt of the cathedral is a pontifical and secular burial place. Since the renovations of the Frigyes and Károly Mihály Althann's coats of arms on the tombstones moved here from the demolished St Michael's Church and Roch Chapel Maulbertsch fresco in the crypt depicting the sepulchring of Jesus The Minor Provost's Palace behind the cathedral, as well as the prebendal houses, were built in Zopf style in the early 1780s. The higher elementary school for girls (today Roman Catholic Elementary School) next to them was built by Bishop Károly Csáky at the beginning of the 20th century, and was named after his mother Karolina. The Neoromanesque school chapel is attached to the wing perpendicular to the square. Its interior was painted by Aladár Kriesch Kőrösfői.
