164 VÁC IN THE 20TH CENTURY French foundation and management had started working in Vác in 1895. Besides France the company owned factories in Canada, Belgium, Russia and Germany. They settled in Vác in order to supply the Austro-Hungarian market with their product. They employed an average of 30 people, who mainly did packaging and delivery because production itself was fully mechanized. Despite the advertising campaign in the press contemporary housewives were averse to the detergent "without soap" produced by J Picot's patent, so the business made losses. In early May 1913 a fire broke out in the factory and the fact that “it took one and a quarter hours until the fire brigade was supplied with water to put out the fire at the Picot factory" reveals a lot about the prevailing conditions. Not only the factory, but also József Farkas, the manager's flat was destroyed as well as seven wagons of detergent waiting for transportation. Although the building was insured, the factory could not survive the loss. ..'S PutvldéUi yUfOittda 1 fácán ON VÁC 17. kC, CIAWYI UT 17 VÁCI HÍRLAP SZERKESZTŐSÉGE ÉS KIADÓHIVATALA Kfc. /W2 * rclBB 10 PESTVIDEKI NYOMDA VACO N. Its boom was associated with the name of Dezső Dercsényi, who took over the press in 1910. They published books on local history, on industry and trade, and newspapers. The Váci Hírlap, the most significant newspaper of the town between the two world wars was also printed here. The golden age of press coincided with this period. In 1910 two further smaller presses started to work in the town. Picture postcards advertising the town and enjoying great popularity at the time were issued by the Völcz and Co Press. István Hirmann's gauge and tool factory also survived the fall of the Monarchy. It was established in 1908 by István Hirmann who had an office and a store in Budapest too.The factory in Vác was equipped with modern machines and employed 35-40 workers. In the beginning mainly gauges and tools for engineering were manufactured. Later the production profile was extended to include taps, drainage accessories and bathroom equipment. Part of the production was exported to Austria and the Balkan states. On the eve of the war in 1913 two new firms were set up: the iron foundry of József Bódeniósz and Sons, and Mihály Bauer's stove factory. In 1913 the legendary Mihály Bauer - who was a teacher, the director of the museum, a globetrotter and the founder of Deákvár - started a new enterprise: a stove factory in a barn in Deákvár. However, it did not exist for long as the First World War put an end to his enterprise. The Bódeniósz iron-foundry, however, boomed between the two world wars. The economic life of the town was dominated by industry and trade. In the first decades B2 _ I p< 1.20. Budapest 1032• hÄ 20-4n Letterhead paper of Hirmann industrial plant
