108 RESETTLEMENT AND THE AGE OF THE GREAT CONSTRUCTIONS - THE 18TH CENTURY Resettlement and the age of the great constructions — the 18th century______________ THETOWN IN RUINS Contemporary sources depict a miserable picture of Vác after the Ottoman occupation. As a result of the liberation wars the town nearly became deserted, houses had been destroyed, churches demolished and the castle had been blown up by the Turks. Some of the population must have survived the war, even if they had got through the last two years of Ottoman rule outside the town, hiding in the neighbouring settlements and forests. Bishop Mihály Miklós Balogh could not help but realize that all of the surviving inhabitants had converted to the Calvinist Reformed faith. Apart from the newcomers coming of their own volition to find a new home, immigrants were encouraged by the bishop-landowners to settle in Vác.
