171 how well versed in wisdom and in the art of preaching must one be, in order to be able to guide his hearers through the endles fields of the spiritual world?! The awe and wonder of eternity and of that unlimited power, with which the idea of Godhead is impregnate; the warmth of inexhaustible love; the secret and the uplif­ting knowledge of the affinity and immortality of the souls created and uncreate, shall appear on the narrow horison of his audience, and the things superterrestrial will proportionately be fitted to our zone of earthly measure. The superiority of Christ’s life and teaching, of his uninterested universal love of man, and of his selfsacrifice; his resurrection in his work as the savior of the world; his rising to a height above time and decay, whence his spirit continually touches our, extend and gowern his earthly dominion: all this, like to the refreshing eastern breaze and to the steady heat of the tropic zone, shall administer to our religious life. The universal rules of Morality and Religion shall be trans­mitted from mouth to mouth, and treasured, perhaps, in the very codes of written law, not only as the tradition ot an age gone by, but, inasmuch as they become in­gredient parts of our spirit, also individual ruling forces of our thinking, and acting, and of the whole manner of our life. Sin shall be pursued not only by land, but there shall constantly be a judge in the consciences of all men in order to arrest and completely to root it out. God will, from the unmeasurable space of the Uni­verse, touch our heart and soul, and we shall cling to Him and to His laws as the brook does to the life­­giving fountain! That is the real preaching of the word. Such result as these make the minister, as a preacher, a lord over the spiritual world. And this mission of his is of first­­rate importance in the church. In realising this noble mission, he, at the same time, fulfils the greater part of
