158 Churches and helping old ones. The B. and F. U. Ass. acts through them in each district, deriving its information, and making its grants, through them. It has s 'cured in various parts of the Country the appointment of superintendent Missionaries, with much good effect. The postal mission and the B. and F. U. Ass. do much service to our cause in the distribution of our literature, and one of the most hopeful signs of the times is the widespread inquiry for our writings, the demand from Calvinistic Scotland this year having been especially remarkable. While the B. aud F. U. Ass. is thus our Central Missionary organ, it remaius however, only an association of individuals desiring to spread their own Unitarian opinians. It is in no sense representative of our churches. These with their open trusts, are not Unitarian foundations ; they limit their future to no Unitarianism, any more then their trinitarian fathers of 200 years ago limited their successors to their Trinitarianism. This distinction was well kept in view, when a few months ago, the old Presbyterian chapel at St. Albans was sold, and the proceeds given to the B. aud F. U. Assn. The association passed them on to the London provincial assembly, representing Churches with open trusts similar to that at St. Albans. As to organisation, I do not know that much can be said- Those who were present at our triennial Conference a Leeds 8 years ago will never forget Dr. Martineau’s plea for closer organisation. With its Central Stipend fund and its ministerial roll. If any living voice could have persuaded our people it were his ; but Congregational independence is so rooted in our Churches that the scheme bore little fruit What did result was this. The missionary assotiations throughout the country were made more representative of the Clurches, Provincial essemlies being established with committies consisting of ministers and delegates
