The chief truths, accepted without doubt as such ^ in the domain of physical inquiry — the reality of substance, force, causality — are they, as compared with spiritual facts, more visible, more apprehensible by the outward eye, or do not they also come to light in the soul’s immediate contemplation, just as is the case with religious and spi­ritual truths? The idea of God is in all ages present in the con­sciousness of man. Though in man’s primitive condition, in his first stages, it appears as it were on the flecked surface of an unscoured mirror, broken into parts, yet these points of light bear witness to a Higher Power than man himself. It .is present throughout every change, as the guiding influence; so that at length, from the midst of erroneous beliefs, parcels of light emerging blend together in some higher contemplation, till from the deeps of thought and conscience arises the idea of God in its grand unity. It is present in its fullness to the highest contemplation, which looking up to the gentle light of stars and beholding the beams of heavenly love, is visited by the radiant image of the most perfect Being, the most perfect Spirit, our Heavenly Father. The idea of God is in all ages present to the mind of man. It is present to the first man, as he stands start­led before the marvel of the great Universe. It is pre­sent to the observer of our own day, who knowing far more of the Universe he beholds, still, when he opens his eyes, wonders not less. The religious relation everywhere exists, binding man to a Higher Will, a Higher Being, whom the first man sought in close nearness to him­self, and who, to-day also, is not very far from any one of us.
