What a transformation of the clear, shining lustre of the Godhead is achieved by the theory which to explain the tragedy of Jesus the revealer, covers the Divine countenance with fierce, dark wrath, because of the sin of the first weak man, Adam. What a mutation is that view of Jesus which, divesting him of spiritual and moral greatness as man, strips the holiest sonship, the most perfect human ideal, on the one hand, of its historical character,7 and while elevating Jesus by the aid of metaphysical speculation, banishes him as a moral ideal, on the other hand, while rendering verbal homage to the principle of the Divine Unity, in effect suffers it to glide into a subtilized form of polytheism. New elements of civilization enter into the life of mankind. Old and new civilizations mingle their streams. Vast centuries pass over our race and repeat the same phenomena. Changes are made. There are the changes which tend towards clearer gains of spiritual truth, namely the changes of evolution. And there are changes, favoured by the great majority of men, which lead them far from the clearer spiritual truth, namely the changes in which the process of evolution is reversed. Changes occur even in the beliefs of those who affirm the formulated confessions of faith as unchangeable verities, hut who, influenced by the enlightenment of their time, bestow another sense upon these confessions than that of the age in which their form Avas fixed. Definitions of faith, confessions, dogmata, all expressions of religious thinking are changeable. But from this fact of change no just apology can he draAvn for mere uncertainty and doubt; still less for the denial of all religion, as though there Avere nothing durable, nothing immutable in it.
