134 Your invitation to attend the conference at Buda-Pesth is very attractive, and if I were not held in this country by the strongest ties I should make a great effort to accept it. .. You are assuredly right in thinking that this will be an eventful era for you. We have read in our papers some notices of the splendid ceremonies with which you inaugurated your millenium, and the Conference which you purpose holding at your capital will be full of interest.. On all hands the effect of our methods of thought is seen in the new treatment of the Bible, and the fteedom with which ancient dogmas are applied to modem forms, with their real substance left out ! When you have a little leisure to think of English books, I should be very glad to send a small present to the library of your College. We have just received a little gift from some American friends, and greatly value these marks of international goodwill. Now may all success attend your Conference. On my return from a voyage I find your kind and attractive invitation to the Unitarian Conference on my table. I should be very glad to make aqquaintance with your Country and church, both of which have always had a great interest for me; and I should then also have a very valuable opportunity of renewing my personal acquaintance with yourself, Mr. Kovács and the other Hungarians who have completed their studies for the ministry in Manchester College. But it is impossible; I have already travelled this year more than I usually do in the whole year, and shall be again away from home at the date of the Conference. Please to remember me very kindly to Messrs. Boros & Kovács. I take this opportunity of sending you for the library of the Unitarian College of Kolozsvár two essays by myself on the «Song of Songs.» They are intended to accompany the translation of the Song which I have contributed to Prof. Paul Haupt’s (of Baltimore) English Bible, of which several parts have appeared already, though not yet the Song of Songs. I would strongly recommend this Bible (or rather Old Testament) to your attention.
