119 all the religous discussions, which wore held after 1566 in the different parts of Transsylvania and at Nagy- Várad; but by his literary works also, he gave a great impulse to the new religpus movement, which like rushing fire spread all over the different parts of Transylvania, where people were awake to the love of freedom and truth and chiefly at Kolozsvár, Torda, Maros- Vásárhely, Gyula-Fej érvár, Abrudbánya, Toroczkó and also at the Székely--land. John II. having embraced the Unitarian religion, all the noble families in Transylvania followed him; and in several parts of Hungary many embraced Unitarian religion. However with great regret we must mention here that on account of difference of creeds, Blandrata very soon came into collision with Fr. Dávid. The consequence of which was, that Fr. Dávid, the first bishop of the Transylvanian Unitarians, and the founder of this religion, for his strong attachment to the belie! in the Unity of the Godhead, was persecuted, and in 1579 was condemned to be imprisoned for life. He was carried to the fortress of Déva, where on the 15-tli. of November in the same year he died-After his death a long series of vexations and persecutions were begun against Unitarians. And so it came about in the time of the Transylvanian prince, Gabriel Bethlen that, by the malevolence of some people and especially that of the Calvinist bishop Dajka all the persecutions, intended against the Sabbatarians, were directed against the Unitarians, although their creeds were different from those of the Unitarians. On the 13-th of April in<i 638, the confessions of Unitarians, which were drawn up in 1579, after Fr. I livid’s imprisonment, were laid before the parliament assembled at Gyula-Fejérvár. They were given into the hands of a Committee, the members of which assembled at Deézs on the 1-st of July in the same year, who examined both
