102 when with true humbleness we make these our confessions before thee — the livelier are our feelings in which our gratitude streams forth: for thy goodness and love to us has always, unalterably been the same. Thou hast led humanity ever higher in the paths of enlightenment. From the house of bondage thou hast led us to the land of promise. Thy spirit has brought on an age, when thought may find free expression, and the different manifestations of faith are no longer fettered by the despotism of brutish force. When human sympathy triumphs over sectarian narrowness, and thy children of different faith have learnt to work in common for thy eternal purposes. Here do join with us in prayer our English and American brethren in our common faith. Eternal Father ! may thy holy blessing descend on the two great brother nations; on the two great and powerful countries, which through their love of truth thou hast chosen for such divinely service in the cause of humanity. Sympathy has drawn them to us when we were crushed and down trodden by our enemies. When we were alone and friendless in the great community of nations, comfort, sympathy and substantial help came to us from those classic lands of justice, humanity and right. And even with how much closer ties have been joyned to us our brethren in the common faith.Even the stones of our schools and the bricks of this very church speak of their brotherly charity. May thy blessing be with those who are far away from us and with their representatives in our midst. May thy blessing descend on our dear Fatherland. . . every inch of its soil is dear to us by a thousand consecrated memories grown up in a thousand years.
