WHAT IS THE UFHS ? The United Association of Hungarian University and High School Students (MEFESZ) was formed in October, 1956 by the youth who fought for freedom and national independence. After the Revolution the regime made it impossible for this organization to function; it imprisoned the leaders and forced many of them to flee from the country. The MEFESZ leaders who succeeded in ARGENTINA : — The Federation of Hungarian Stu­dents in Argentina cabled their protest to the President of the Paraguay Re­public against the imprisonment of Louis Alfonso Resck. — The President of our Argentine Student Union participated in the work of the committee investigating South American conditions. AUSTRIA : — The Union of Hungarian students in Graz organized a series of lectures for Austrian foreign students. The lec­tures presented Hungary to those inter­ested, with the help of films. GERMANY : — Hungarian artist, Mrs. Jaszai Kiss Maria, took part in an exhibition of paintings organized in the “Haus der Kunst“ in Munich. She is a student of the Munich Academy of Arts. — The Hungarian Student Union in Germany distributed 600 copies of its monthly information pamphlet. — The following completed their studies in Hannover: Jenő Bors, István Fendrik, Gyula Kovács, Mrs. István Porgesz (in art), István Sikosky (in architecture). Ferenc Kassa (veterinary surgeon). THE NETHERLAND: — The associated Hungarian student union in Netherlands, the "Kelemen Mikes” circle, organized study meetings in Leiden. The Dutch press voiced its appreciation of the exhibition of paint­ings that took place during these meeting. Thirty Hungarian artists sent entries for various countries. During the meetings of the "Kelemen Mikes” circle in May, Indian student J.S. Rao, who currently studies in The Hague, gave a lecture entitled "The Role of Political Parties in Indian Democracy”. SWEDEN : — The Students of the University of Lund collected a considerable sum of 1. The UFHS is an independent or­ganization of Hungarian students of various religious and political outlooks. It does not belong to any political or money from which they will use 75,000 crowns to support the studies of seven Hungarian students who immigrated from Austria. They also offered 20,000 crowns for the support of Hungarian students with families in Innsbruck. NORTH AMERICA : — The Association of Hungarian Stu­dents organized forty-two meetings in thirty-seven universities. Approximately, 14.000 to 15,000 people attended these lectures, amongst them 2,500 African and Asian students. — Since 1957, more than 600 Hungarian students received their degrees or diplo­­mans in various American universities.-— The Association started a book collecting campaign for African students during which they collected more than 1.000 science text books. The Associa­tion contacted the Nigerian, Ghanian, Kenya and Tanganyika student leaders in order to send the books to the students in their respective countries. — The Association was host to four students from Senegal who were visiting the United States for the first time. SWITZERLAND : — Nine Hungarians received their diplo­mas at the University of St. Gall. — The Union in Zurich collected 282 Swiss Francs to help the Hungarian students who recently crossed the Iron Curtain and were wounded. NORWAY : — A Hungarian student was elected President of the “Stundentersamfund” in Trodhwim. This is the first time that a Hungarian student has held this position. — The establishment of a Hungarian hostel in Oslo has been decided upon, on the initiative of the Hungarian Students' Union in Norway. social group. The UFHS is willing to cooperate with organizations and indi­viduals having similar aims. 2. The UFHS, being part of the com­ing intellectual generation of Hungary, shares the principles of the Hungarian Revolution of October 1956, striving for independence, freedom and democracy, and acting on the basis of these priciples as far as they do not run counter to the countries in which the Hungarian refu­gee students are residents. 3. The UFHS represents the interests of the Hungarian students by aiding their scholastic and educational progress by all means at its disposal. 4. The UFHS regards as one of its major objectives the discussion and clarification of the intellectual, social and economic problems of Hungarians, thereby providing a forum for the development of constructive ideas and the dissemination of information. 5. The UFHS fosters Hungarian cul­ture and an exchange between Hungarian and other cultures. 6. The UFHS helps Hungarian stu­dents to become better acquainted with the way of life of the nations which are their hosts. How does the UFHS Function ? Every Hungarian student Association has its independent constitution in con­formity with the legal requirements of its host country. If the Association wants to become a member of the UFHS, then it must accept the status of the UFHS, and must present a copy of its individual status on the UFHS Inter­national Secretariat. The annual Congress appreciates the work of the Presidency and of the Inter­national Secretariat during the proceed­ing year, passes resolutions and elects a new leadership whose task is to carry out the resolutions.
