William May, chairman of New York Statue of Liberty Centennial Commission, presented the Medal to 80 persons from different sectors of United States. Three Hungarian Americans were amongst them: PETER RONA, president of Schroeder Investment Bank, Ltd.; Dr. ZOLTÁN SZÁZ, vice president of American Foreign Policy Institute, and of National Confederation of American Ethnic Group; and Dr. ANDREW T. UDVARDY, president of the Col. Michael Kovats de Fabriczy Association. Einstein Letter Sold. Publisher Malcolm Forbes paid $220,000 for a version of the letter Albert Einstein sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, urging him to pursue the Possibility of an atomic bomb. The letter was written in 1939, when Hungarian-born LEO SZILARD asked Einsteins help in convincing president Roosevelt of the need for an atomic program. Szilard wrote two letters of different lengths, and Einstein signed both. On October 11, the longer letter was sent to Roosevelt. He responded by setting up the committee that ultimately resulted in the Manhattan Project, where majority of scientists working on the project were Hungarian-born.
