PROFILES IN FOCUS — by - Paul Pulitzer America’s Foremost Skin-Care Specialist: “I have never seen a perfect skin,” says ILONA OF HUNGARY, an energetic, people-loving beauty executive who has built a multimillion dollar business on her skin care principles and product. Her methods include jet age equipment, expert fingers of well-trained estheticians, mineral-rich and climate keyed products in effective programs, the Ilona philosophy of water, the Ilona conviction of lifetime care for your face. Like disciples voyaging to Shangri-la, over one million women and men from everywhere came to her elegantly appointed Institutes of Skin Care for individualized, luxuriously facepampering treatments. The Institutes, located in New York, Houston, Denver and soon to be in Chicago, were featured in national media. An exploding mail order business brings her treatment products with step by step instruction booklet and advice to a growing do-at-home audience here and abroad. Behind every successful woman is a successful man. Husband, George Mészáros, runs the company as Chairman of the Board and Executive Vice President. Ilona, renowned by the one name is President. She began her skin teachings and preachings, as she refers to them, in a small section of a beauty salon Mészáros owned in Chatham, New Jersey. When doctors prescribed a dry climate after his automobile accident injuries, the couple moved to Denver in 1971. The energy, environment and skiing revolutions cast their golden glow. A cold sunny climate parched sunworshipping complexions, encouraging early wrinkles. They began modestly in two small rooms. Word of mouth, local advertising and appearances, by popular demand, on the ‘‘Good Morning Denver” TV show helped build business. Today Ilona of Hungary Institute of Skin Care and corporate headquarters occupy thirty thousand square feet of a handsome fourstory building in Denver's fashionable Cherry Creek suburb. Ski and skin care sophisticates surged into Denver from Houston and New York, providing impetus for branches in those cities. The Houston Institute opened inn 1978. New York’s Institute of Skin Care premiered in its own building, Lage 8 a totally redesigned Park Avenue townhouse. Ilona calls it ’’the magical address.” In a rosy startup, it has already broken the company’s sales records. Her lifelong career began as a child. It continued with exhaustive studies of anatomy and body chemistry in Vienna, Budapest and London. Intensive training and apprenticeship followed in European tradition. Knowing the intricate network of muscles and tissues which underlay the face and support its skin, she designed massage rhythmics in harmony with them. She reads medical texts constantly seeking new in formation for her serious, scientific appraoch to skin care. Her vitamin-rich products are formulated with a pH balance factor maximizing benefits. Magnesium and other minerals combined with Kristályvíz natural mineral water from an artesian well in Hungary, first discovered by ancient Romans, make them remarkably efficacious. Hydrating creams, lotions used with water an her water mist and rinse therapies are some cooling delights. Rare oils refine, regulate, soften, restore or protect. Mint, protein-placenta, embryo, mineral mud, honey-lecithin and blemish masks serve different skin needs. Lightly aromatic fragrances are sense pleasers. The Ilona of Hungary treatment collection includes over twenty-five products packaged in vivid orange with white and gold accents. ‘‘Women who follow my program faithfully for a long time will not need a face lift,” Ilona proudly states.
