Unification Behind a Just Cause is the Objective of: THE UNITED HUNGARIAN-AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY-ELLIS ISLAND — by — Paul Pulitzer, President & Executive Director Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the two symbols of what our great “NATION OF IMMIGRANTS" stands for among the world’s family of nations and their peoples, are being restored as national monuments. This $230-million restoration project is not being financed by our Government. It is being paid for by the American people — among them, the men, women, and children belonging to the many ethnic communities which make our society the unique kind that it is. These ethnics have already organized and launched fundraising campaigns in the name of their respective identities, and some have pledged goals of $1,000,000 or more. WE HUNGARIAN-AMERICANS, WHOSE CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS OUR COUNTRY’S GREATNESS EQUALS THAT MADE BY ANOTHER ETHNIC COMMUNITY IN AMERICA AND WHO CAN BE PROUD THAT ONE OF OUR OWN PEOPLE MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE STATUE OF LIBERTY TO BE ERECTED ALMOST 100 YEARS AGO, MUST DO THE SAME! This, then, is the reason why we, of the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation, felt obligated to help form the United Hungarian-American Committee for the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island. BACKGROUND OF ORGANIZATION Sponsored by the Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation in the cooperation with the American-Hungarian Citizens Club of Rahway (New Jersey), and with the prior knowledge and approval of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., the national fundraising division of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan and chaired by Lee A. lacocca of the Chrysler Corporation, a meeting of representatives from Hungarian clubs, organizations, and churches was held last November (1984) to discuss ways and means to organize and implement a nationwide fundraising campaign, within the Hungarian community in America, for the benefit of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island restoration projects. The constructive result of this meeting was the immediate formation of the United Hungarian-American Committee for the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island, whose originating members are as follows: • Hungarian Eighth Tribe Foundation • Eighth Hungarian Tribe Magazine • American-Hungarian Citizens Club of Rahway • Hungarian Charitable Association • The Rákóczi Foundation • American-Hungarian Literary Guild • American-Hungarian Citizens Club of Woodbridge • Hungarian Reformed Federation of America The founding officers of the Committee are: Louis Ruszkay, Chairman; Rev. Stefan M. Torok, Vice-Chairman; Priscilla Hunyady, Secretary-Treasurer; and Paul Pulitzer, Director of Advertising, Publicity, and Public Relations. The Eighth Hungarian Tribe magazine (Bethlen Press) will play a major role in the campaign as a medium of communications. Dues-free membership in the Committee is open to ALL Hungarian clubs, churches, and organizations in the United States and Canada. Hungarian businessmen and professional people are also invited to join as Patrons. OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES The fundraising procedures to be followed by each participating member of the Committee are designed for simplicity, maximum input, and absolute confidence in the financial responsibility, accountability, and integrity of management. These are as follows: 1. Each promotes and collects donations from in-house membership and each records the individual donor’s name and address, and amount of contributions. 2. When all in-house contributions are in, each mails a copy of the list of donors ONLY directly to the Committee at P.O. Box 2203, Union, New Jersey 07083, while one check in the full amount of the money collected, is made payable “IN TRUST FOR THE STATUE OF LIBERTY-ELLIS ISLAND FOUNDATION. INC.” and mailed directly to the: UNION CENTER NATIONAL BANK, 2003 Morris Avenue, Union, New Jersey 07083. An inprinted and pre-addressed envelope, as well as a deposit slip, will be made availabale to all participating members of the Committee. 3. NOTE: ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX-DEDUCTIBLE. In other words, the Committee is NOT the recipient of donations. It is the Trust Bank, which holds all receipts in trust for the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. When the nationwide fundraising campaign is over (December 31st, 1985), this Trust Bank will issue one bank check, in the full amount held IN TRUST, payaable to the said Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc., and this check will be ceremoniously hand-delivered by representatives of the Committee (as a whole) in the name of the Hungarian community in America. DONOR/PARTICIPATING MEMBER RECOGNITIONS Every Hungarian club, church, and organization participating in the fundraising campaign as an official member of the United Hungarian- American Committee for the Restoration of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island, as well as businessmen and professional Patrons, will receive special citations from the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. In addition, each individual donor will receive a Certificate suitable for framing. Moreover, the name of each individual donor, as well as the identity of his or her club, church, or organization, will be recorded permanently and housed at Ellis Island - WHERE THE NAMES OF ALL IMMIGRANTS, WHO CAME TO AMERICA TO BEGIN NEW LIVES FREE FROM OPPRESSION, ECONOMIC BONDAGE, AND RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION, WILL BE ALSO STORED FOR PUBLIC VIEW AND REFERENCE. OUT DEBT TO THE PAST As we Hungarian-Americans, particularly those of us who are American-born, owe our presence here to those who came before us from Hungary, and whose first sight of their “Promised Land” was the Statue of Liberty and who first stepped on American soil at Ellis Island, we must pay homage to them by getting together today behind this great commemorative endeavor. For, while paying our debt to the past by uniting behind this JUST CAUSE IN COMMON, we will also be demonstrating in front of the entire Nation that we have good and valid reasons for being proud of our Hungarian heritage. All you have to do to join our Committee is to write to us and let us know of your interest. The address is: P.O. Box 2203, Union, New Jersey 07083.
