THE MARTYROOM AND THE GLORY The life of József Cardinal Mindszenty 1982-1975 An audio-visual presentation which depicts the heroic life of József Cardinal Mindszenty, prince primate of Hungary who died on May 6, 1975, is available. This presentation is based on the Cardinal’s book József Cardinal Mindszenty Memoirs. Cardinal Mindszenty’s remarkable life under Naziism briefly and then under Communism for 23 years exemplified extraordinary faith, hope and love of God and love of his people of Hungary. He suffered intensely for his faith, his faithful, and his country from harassment, persecution and imprisonment by the communists. Outstanding examples of other religious leaders, Catholic and Protestant, who struggled against atheistic Communism and tyranny are many: the Croation Cardinal Stepinac, Czechoslovakian Cardinal Beran, the Hungarian Lutheran Bishop Ordass and Reformed Bishop Ravasz, the Lithuanian Bishops Sladkovcius and Steponavicius, Polish Cardinal Syszynszki, Transylvanian Bishop Marton, and the Ukrainian Cardinal Slipyj. Each of these men were imprisoned for his belief in religious freedom and human rights, many were exiled from their people and country. We wish, by means of this presentation, to make the life of Cardinal Mindszenty known to as many people throughout the free world as possible as an example of saintly heroism for all to follow! Box 2464 Youngstown, Ohio 44509-0464 Although Rumania entered World War II on the German side, she was successfully invaded by the Soviets. In August 1944, she switched camps. The war ended with Rumania on the side of the victorious Soviet army. The armistice of August 23, 1944 gave her the administration of northern Transylvania. Yet, the atrocities committed by returning Rumanian units were such that the Red Army had to expel the Rumanian administration and establish its own in October 1944. This has been the only known instance of the Red Army directly intervening to save Transylvania’s inhabitants against local terrorists. Only after Gromyko’s visit to Bucharest following the Yalta Conference which resulted in the establishment of a Communist-dominated coalition government in Bucharest did the U.S.S.R. agree to return the northern part of Transylvania to Rumanian administration. At the Paris Peace Conference of 1946, the United States favored the return of the Hungarian-inhabited frontier zone to Hungary.-TRANSYLVANIA: THE HUNGARIAN MINORITY IN RUMANIA—Julia Nanay, $5.00 plus 75C postage.
