THE TRANSILVANIA INN: Where Hungarian “Erdély” and Rumanian “Transilvania” Meet And Are One and The Same TRANSILVANIA INN 538 Adeline Street Trenton, New Jersey 08611 Tel: 609-393-6133 (EDITOR’S NOTE: The word “Transylvania” is not misspelled. Because the Rumanian alphabet has no “y". the translation of “Transylvania" from Rumanian into English by the proprietors is “Transilvania". So there!) TRENTON - Hungarian patrons of the “Transilvania Inn" here, and there are many of them, forget all about the burning issue of the annexation of their beloved “Erdély” by Rumania the minute they step through the carved door and are warmly welcomed by Petr and Margareta Buda, the Hungarian- Rumanian proprietors. But, if their friendly greeting may not be enough for some die-hards, then the authentic, Transylvanian decor and ambience of this dining out-place should. If not, then a mile-long menu of Hungarian dishes, a list of choice Hungarian wines, and the gypsy violin of Gene Mate should do the trick, and that is for sure. For this absolutely delightful inn is as Hungarian as the “Hurka” that Margareta spreads on thick, buttered slabs of home-made, peasant bread and garnishes with slices of pepper. A word of caution, though. This is no place for light eaters because portions served are huge! PROPRIETORS HAVE HUNGARIAN “ROOTS” Petr (or Peter) was born in Bucharest and Margareta in Kolozsvár (now Cluj). Both, however, have Hungarian “roots”. October-November, 1984 Margareta and Petr (Peter) Buda. Petr’s mother, for example, was Hungarian, while Margareta was born in Erdély. The Hungarian heritage of both is reflected in the interior decoration of their restaurant, a collection of paintings, and artifacts which, to be sure, makes Hungarian patrons feel right at home. The Budas took over what was nothing more than a corner tavern about a year ago and converted it into an authentic, Erdelyi-country inn. Since then, it has become so popular that its seating capacity will soon not be enough. That's because of its genial atmosphere, Transylvanian ambience, superb food and service, and moderate prices. A MENU TO FIT ALL BUDGETS The inn’s menu offers a wide selection of appetizers from $1.75 to $8.95; Entrees from $8.90 (Hungarian Beef Goulash) to a whopping platter of “A Taste of Transylvania” for two at $28.00; desserts from $2.50 to $3.25; and a variety of hot and cold beverages from 75<f to $2.50. The wine list offers the finest in Hungarian wines at reasonable prices. ADVANCE RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED The Transilvania Inn is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday from 5:00-9:00 P.M. The strolling gypsy violinist. Gene Mate, plays on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. All major credit cards are accepted. Advance reservations are recommended.
