TRAVEL HUNGARY This month, from September 20 to October 6, connoisseurs of fine Hungarian wines will be enjoying a world of “sweet tranquility”. For they will be on the third and last, in a series of three, Hungarian Heritage Tours sponsored by Fugazy International Travel of North Brunswick, New Jersey, in cooperation with Ibusz and Pan Am. It is called the “Wine Harvest Season Tour”. There are five major wine regions in Hungary. These are the Great Hungarian Plain, Northern Transdanubia, Southern Transdanubia, Northern Hungary, and Tokaj-Hegyalja. Together, these regions account for more than 61 different kinds of wine. Of these, the “Tokay” produced in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region is the most famous worldwide. The fame of Tokay wine is traceable back to the Middle Ages when it was first exported to Poland and hailed by the Poles as “the only true wine”. By the 16th Century, it had become popular in St. Petersburg, Prague, Vienna, the Scandinavian countries, and in London. In fact, so popular that doctors believed that it contained magical curative powers and treated their patients with it. King John III of Sweden, however, also used it to cure his sick horse! King Louis XIV of France, Peter the Great of Russia, Frederick the Great of Prussia, Voltaire, Goethe, Schubert, Beethovan, and a host of others in the pages of world history were Tokay drinkers. But is was Anatole France, again, who summed it all up as follows: “one glassful and a feeling of sweet tranquility begins to hover over me.” Soon now, “sweet tranquility” will begin to hover over a plane-load of Tokay tasters from the United States somewhere in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region of Hungary. It would be just great to be with them and to help them carry the awesome burden of their “sweet tranquility”!
