THE PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY HUNGARIAN SPORTS CLUB AND ITS “MAGYAR TANYA”-by-Roger B. Goodman HEREFORD, PA. — Now that their successful “Hungarian Day” last month is past history, it is time to present in brief some more information about the Philadelphia and Vicinity Hungarian Sports Club and its delightful “Magyar Tanya”. Perhaps, it may help to make next year’s “gathering of the Magyar clans” bigger and better. This is what the clubhouse at the “Magyar Tanya” looked like when the club took over the property. This is what the clubhouse at the “Magyar Tanya” looks like today. CLUB CHARTER AND PURPOSES This club was established in 1961 as a non-profit organization and received its Charter from the State of Pennsylvania on April 18, 1963. Its purpose is to provide outdoor, sporting, entertainment, and recreational facilities for the benefit of its members and, by also sponsoring the Hungarian Boy and Girl Scout Troops of the Philadelphia area and providing them with Page 12 camping facilities, the club fosters the preservation and perpetuation of the Hungarian heritage. The corporate structure of this club consists of shareholding and associate members, governed by a 22-person, Board of Directors, who are elected by the shareholding members at an annual meeting. The club’s operatinal, maintenance, and improvements costs are covered by membership dues, private contributions, and net income from regularly scheduled, social affairs. Annual dues are as follows: for families, including children under 18 years of age, $185.00; for individuals, $92.50; retired families (after 5 years of paid membership), $50.00; and retired individuals (after 5 years of paid membership), $25.00. All members may purchase shares of stock at $50.00-par-value per share and thus become eligible to vote at the shareholders meeting, to elect officers of the Board of Directors, or to be elected to the same. The “Magyar Tanya” is Olympic-size swimming pool adjacent service building. Another view of the 2-story-high, service building, which has everything needed to support outdoor fun-and-games. The priceless “diamond in the club's diadem” is its “Magyar Tanya”, which consists of 121 acres of prime woodland in Hereford Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The Clubhouse offers two spacious dining and assembly rooms, a fully equipped modern kitchen which serves a variety of Hungarian and American foods, and other amenities. During the summer season, the facility offers a large bathing area, which includes an Olympic-size, swimming pool, large kitchen, service building, wash rooms, volley ball court, and other recreational and sports areas. In addition, tent and trailer campsites are also available. During the hunting season, the property is a favored hunting ground of the members. For weekenders or vacationers, six guest rooms are available at reasonable rates. It is a wonderful place to get away from it all!
