i I Perseverance Pays Off for 1984’s Miss After finishing last year’s competition as first runner-up, 20-year-old Wanda King, of 616 W. First Ave., Derry, has come back to capture the title of 1984’s Miss Magyar of Western Pennsylvania. She finished first in a field of eight contestants. King is a sophomore honors student at The New York Academy of Theatrical Arts, where she is studying to be an actress. She is also a private first class in the army rserve. She has served for two years in the motor pool at the 1004th General Supply Company in Greensburg. During the summer, King works as a waitress at Pizza Hut in Latrobe and gives swimming lessons at Derry’s community pool, where she has been a lifeguard for four years. King has been a finalist in numerous other competitions. She won the title of Miss Teen Pennsylvania in 1982, and she finished as third runner-up nationally. King ws also a finalist in 1982’s Miss Teen-age Pennsylvania contest, and in 1983 she finished in the top ten in the Miss American Co-Ed competition and in the top five at the Miss United Teen-ager pageant, where she won the volunteer award. August 25, 1986, is a day for which King is anxiously awaiting. That is when she is scheduled to depart with her sister, Debbie, on a 20-day tour of Eastern Europe, including Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece, the Greek Islands and Turkey. King said she is eager to see for herself what life is like in Hungary. In Budapest, she is looking forward to seeing the palace and the universities, and, outside of the city, she will visit her ancestors’ homes. King's hobbies include dancing, swimming, roller-skating and socializing. She describes herself as ambitious, determined, dedicated and fun. King came to Pennsylvania from Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1979. She was very surprised to win the contest. “My grandmother would be so proud of me,” she exclaimed. As Miss Magyar, King was given a crown, medallion, trophy and $100 savings bond. The first runner-up in this year’s Miss Magyar competition is 19-year-old Jacquelyn Marie Javorsky, of Box 71, Daisytown. She is a graduate of The Bradford School, and she is currently employed as a secretary of Falconhurst Construction, of California, PA. Javorsky has participated in the Magyar Rózsás Dance Group of Fayette County for five years. Seventeen-year-old Luanne Plavecsky, of 316 Hazel Ave., Ellwood City, finished the competition as second runner-up. Plavecsky works as a cashier at Riverside Pharmacy and is entering her senior year at Lincoln High School. Her activities include the girls’ softball team, the ushers’ club and the American Field Service, where she serves as vice president. Runners-up were awarded trophies, medallions and $50 savings bonds. Also competing in this year’s pageant were Debra Lyne Dewar, of New Eagle, Pamela Jean Horvath, of Trafford, Joyce Ann Peterson, of Greenock, Russene M. Miller, of Latrobe, and Debbie King (Wanda’s sister), of Derry. The judges for this year’s Miss Magyar competition were Margaret Fazio, a buyer for Sally Fashions department store; Judy Banai, Miss Magyar of 1979; Joseph Berei, representing the Hungarian Club of Hazelwood; Sándor E. Chomos, editor of The Eight Hungarian Tribe, and Debbie Heyz, Miss Magyar of 1976 and 1978, who is also chairman of the pageant. Contestants were judged on poise and appearance; civic, community and scholastic achievements; and interest in promoting the Hungarian culture. Those interested in becoming candidates for next year’s pageant should send their names, addresses and phone numbers to the McKeesport Hungarian Social Club, c/o Miss Magyar Chairman, 3004 Walnut St., McKeesport, PA 15132. Candidates should be 16 to 23 years of age, residents of western Pennsylvania and have at least one parent of Hungarian descent. The application deadline is mid-July of 1985.
