BOOK REVIEW — by — Harry G. Ladanye 1000 Years of the Hungarian Art of War -by-Anthony Tihamér Komjáthy 1982 Rákóczi Foundation, Toronto, Canada $20.00 The author has relied upon his considerable literary talent, his personal experiences as a career officer, and his thorough knowledge of politics, diplomacy, and military history to make this the fascinating book that it is. Moreover, while he is precise in his military analysis, he also conveys his story in a style that is interesting to lay readers as well as instructive for military experts. The author, in this work, presents new insights into historic battles with the Mongols, Turks, Habsburgs, etc. and includes many lesser known events. I was especially intrigued by Hadik’s daring raid on Berlin, a battle I’m sure few have heard of before. It is, in my opinion, an outstanding example of a brilliant execution of military tactics and strategy and a superb example of Hungarian determination, courage, and organization. But, besides analyzing these military events, the author also paints a skillfull picture of the inter-relationship with politics, social and economic conditions, diplomacy, and military affairs in order to reveal Hungary’s national spirit. To be sure, this is a “handbook” which “can help our young people to argue effectively when confronted with distortions of Hungarian military history and thus prevent them from turning away in frustration from their ethnic heritage.” We have in this volume a meritorious effort and a valuable contribution to a goal we should all cherish - the dedication of our time and energy tc derstand and preserve our rich Hungarian heritage!
