NEWS FROM HUNGARY Hungarian National Theatre Reconstruction Committee Holds Meeting The committee appointed for the reconstruction of the Hungarian National Theatre recently held a meeting in the House of Parliament to review the status of the project, to discuss ways and means to help promote a greater increase in the flow of donations for the project from Hungarians living in other countries around the world, and to be updated on how much money was received so far. Those present at this meeting were: Paul Losonc/i, the Chairman of the committee; Michael Hubay. the President of the Hungarian Writers Association; George Marosan; Ivan Boldizsár; Michael Peter Veress; Kalman Abraham, the Minister of Economic Development; Cardinal László Lekai; David Malonyay, the Director of the Hungarian National Theatre; Blanka Pechy; Imre Sinkovits; Ge/a Hambuch, Secretary of the Hungarian-German Association; and Gyula Kozar, the Director of the Hungarian Television System. According to the reports submitted to the committee, construction will begin this year and is scheduled to be completed in 1989. The site location of the new theatre will be on Dózsa György Road. So far, it was reported, a total of 19.398,811 forints have been raised for the project of which 17,942,015 forints was received from domestic donations and 1,456,796 forints from Hungarians in the United States, England. France, and other countries. One decision that was proposed and adopted by the committee was that a Memorial Album, bearing the name of donators to the fund, would be prepared for presentation to all individuals or groups donating at least 2000 forints. In addition, the committee will launch a worldwide, promotional campaign to make Hungarians more aware of and knowledgeable about the historical significance of the project. May. 1984 The supporting group behind this project is the World Federation of Hungarians, which is an organization established under the auspices of the Hungarian Government to foster closer relations and better understanding with Hungarians all over the world whether Hungarian-born or foreign-born and regardless of generation. Its public relations efforts include the sponsoring of conferences, meetings, and other kinds of activities for such special interest groups as doctors, teachers, linguists, writers, journalists, industrialists. business people, and others. This year, for example, it is inviting Hungarian dance groups from all over the world to participate in an international competition. You will find the first of these four articles on the next page.) Hungarian Mountain-Climbers To Tackle Himalchuli After conquering mountain-climbing challenges around the world. Hungarian mountain-climbers now plan to face up to their greatest challenge. They are planning to assault the 25.801 loot-high Himalchuli Mountain in Nepal. Teams from Japan. Italy. England. Poland, and other countries have tried to scale it in recent years, but each failed. The only time any team succeeded was more than 24 years ago and. at that time, it was a team from Japan. The Hungarian expedition is scheduled to begin its climb in August. I Hungarian Film Nominated For Oscar A Hungarian film production entitled “JOB LAZADASA” has been nominated for an Oscar by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. The stars of this film are Zenthe Ferenc, the winner of the Hungarian Film Critic’s award and Temessy Hedi. The film was produced under the direction of Szabó Gabor. Budapest International Fairs A nd Exhibitions (Spring and A utumn) Budapest has become well known all over the world as a major center for international fairs and exhibitions. Under the managerial direction of “HUNGEXPO”. which is headed up by Dr. László Korosvolgyi, the following fairs and exhibitions are scheduled for this month and for the month of September: • May 23-31: Budapest International Spring Fair '84 • Sept. 14-23: Budapest International Autumn Fair '84 More than 2000 exhibitors from 35 countries are participating in the Spring Fair and over 1300 in the Autumn Fair. Éhese two events alone attract more than 1.000.000 v isitors to Budapest each yea r. Aerobics in Budapest Aerobic exercise has spread widely in Hungary. First it was “exercise-in-house”, later jogging gained popularity and now Jane Fonda's exercise for health and beauty has conquered Hungary. On Margitsziget (Margaret Island), in the Thermal Studio, the popular exercise program started under medical superv ision. Statistical Report from Hungary As of December 31. 1983. the population of Hungary stood at 10.679.000: twenty-one thousand less than a year ago: 128 thousand births: six thousand less than in 1982. Deaths reported 149 thousand: five thousand more than the previous year. So the population grow th was minus 21.000. One of the reasons is the high abortion rate in Hungary.
