I Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscribers. This magazine is and remains the “LIFE LINE” that keeps us together, that makes us and shapes us into a national Family. THE EDITOR’S CORNER . . . On behalf of the Editorial Board of the Eighth Tribe and the Bethlen Press — we wish our readers a Blessed Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous New Year. With the morality of the people in the United States at a low point and getting worse, both the Federal and State of government levels are urging people to return to the moral values of our forefathers. More and more we realize the true meaning of President Theodore Roosevelt’s words: “If people do not honor their parents and the nation they are from, they will not honor this land either.” We now see more and more publications like the Eighth Tribe. The newest one that’s come to our attention is by a nationality group much smaller in numbers than the American Hungarians, — yet their subscription way-out-passed this magazine in a much shorter length of time (six years less). We would like to throw this up for discussion to our readers. Why? Send us your opinion. —o— We’ve been receiving questions on “Generations”: Are those who are born here of parents of immigrants Second or First Generation? We made inquiries on this subject and came up with two answers, neither of which puts us in a much clearer situation: (I) The persons who came to this new land are considered the first generation of that nationality in the United States. Their children are the second generation. I remember in my youth, there were scholarships and beauty contests sponsored by different societies for the second generation, like myself. Many of the winners won trips to Hungary; (II) where they are talking about “First born gener, ation.” Which is self explanatory ... So there are two choices. Take your pick.
