Sincerely, Margaret Kottan-Oeler West Mifflin, Pa. Gentlemen: I was born in Merény, Szepes county where the Gölnicz River flows and the Vas River flows right through the center of the town and then enters the Gölnicz River somewhere further out of town. The town was founded in the year 1290 by settlers from Schwedler and others who arrived from Saxony, the Province of Franconica. I read and write Hungarian though we landed in Buffalo, N.Y. in the Fall of 1907 about October. I was born in 1899 and went to school in Merény and also in Jabloncs. So much for the background. I am enclosing a check for $25.00 for the Eighth Tribe Foundation. I am a member of Hungarian (Magyar) Club and I am taking copies of the Eighth Tribe and will hopefully get the floor and ask how many are subscribers so that I can drum-up interest and subscribers. — Én kérdezem “Hol vannak a Magyarok?” Cordially Yours, Louis L. Ambrose Chicago, Illinois. Gentlemen: Enclosing check for my renewal of Eighth Tribe. I have looked forward to each month’s issue with great joy. Thank you for the October issue, The Transylvanian Quarterly with the news of problems of fellow Hungarians was shocking — we as Hungarian should be aware, informed and cry-out for action. You helped me to be aware! Thank you also for the music, the wonderful Verbunkos. History helps us to be a part of our past, our culture is so very rich, to share it through the Eighth Tribe is wonderful. I am saving all the issues for my young daughter, for the information is a part of her too. I have an idea for your readers — why not contact your church leaders, club leaders, relatives and friends to all enroll NOW to the Eighth Tribe — we need to ALL support our voice of culture and news in a modern way. Why not a contest to see which state in the U.S. respond with the highest enrollment list? Let Get Motivated NOW! Sincerely, Margit Szakács Leemon Foster City, California Gentlemen: I hate to sound like a right-wing, anti-Communist ethnic, but I’m tired of the adoring articles about Romania’s talented robot, Nadia Comaneci. If America would train dozens of talented 5-year-olds year round (taking them away from their families), it also could produce a few Nadias or Olgas. Besides, she really isn’t Romanian. She comes from Transylvania — a Hungarian speaking province that was given to Romania after World War I. My mother comes from that region. The people there do not consider themselves Romanian. Nadia’s name is really Anna Kemenes, and she had to learn Romanian in school. She also was forced to change her name to compete for Romania. The Romanians glorify their “Roman heritage” and are are proud of the fact that they are Latin and not Slavic or Magyar. But Romania has one of the most repressive dictatorships in the world. Poland and Hungary are democracies in comparison. Thomas Lazar Libertyville, Illinois (This letter was first published in the Chicago Daily News) We urge our readers to participate in gathering news for publication in the Eighth Trobe.
