I would like to tell you of the graduating class of 1980 of Florence High. Through the guidance of their Principal, Mr. Gerrard Steife, they invite us Senior Citizens to visit their high school and serve lunch and entertain us. In May they honored Agnes Carlson with Citizen of the Year with a plaque. For June 13th the graduating class and Mr. Steffe sent me an invitation to be a special guest at the graduating exercises. A special reserved seat for a guest and myself. I was made an honorary 1980 graduate, with a diploma and all. It was a beautiful affair I shall never forget. To think that I graduated from the 5th to 12th grade. But it took me 55 years. May God Bless each and every one that had something to do with me getting this honor. Sincerely, Mrs. Emma M. Peter Roebling, N. J. We urge our readers to participate in gathering news for publication in the Eighth Tribe. If articles of importance appear in your local press about persons of Hungarian descent, organizations or doings — send the clipping to us. Sándor Petőfi: WHY DO YOU FOLLOW Why do you follow my every step, Diligent Patriotism? Why do you show me, night and day, Your worry clouded face? You are always here, you are with me, I even see you when I close my eyes. I know that I do little for the homeland, But I do as much as I possibly can, There are those who have greater strength, Yet they do less: I ask, at least for a time, Turn your face away from me, patriotism. Oh, let me forget that I am a citizen! Spring is here, the earth is blooming, The scent of flowers and the songs of sonorous birds Fill the sky and earth, Golden clouds, those affable ghosts, Blow joyfully about my head. Oh, let me forget that I am a citizen! The god of the poets Is so merciful towards me; should I have no Gratitude towards him? Should I leave my lyre in silence, Until its strings break from sorrow? Oh, let me forget that I am a citizen! I have youth and 1 have a sweetheart. Youthfulness and love offer me Hours lined with pearls, And every hour that I do not take, Is hli ss eternally wasted. Hah, how many fairies there are together: youthfulness, Spring, poetics, love! Should I let them fly away from me? My hand yearningly reaches after them.. . Gome to me. . . hold out your arms. .. Embrace me, 1 am yours! /'esi, 1848, May Translated by Frank Szomy
