Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE November, 1979 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated, to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE’, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscriber. THE EDITOR’S CORNER On behalf of Dr. Albert Wass and myself, I would like to thank the three weekly Hungarian newspapers, who allocated space in their papers to promote the Transylvanian Quarterly and the Eighth Tribe. As we have emphasized many times the Eighth Tribe magazine is not competing with the weekly Hungarian newspaper; most of our readers do not receive any type of Hungarian newspaper. The Hungarian section in this magazine is limited, — although we would like to increase the pages. The English speaking readers are asking us to institute a Hungarian language instruction page. This can be done only when the magazine is self supporting. There are also no advertisements in this magazine — the expenses are paid by subscriptions and donations from the readers. A large share of the expense is carried DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. O. We ask our readers, if they have parents or grandparents who only read Hungarian, to order one of these weekly newspapers for them. The three newspapers are: Kaliforniai Magyarság, 205 S. Western Ave., Suite 201, Los Angeles, California 90004; Magyar Katolikusok Vasárnapja, 1739 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44509; Magyar Élet, Toronto, Ont. Canada. In the September issue there was an article about Otto von Habsburg, the son of the last king of Hungary. Many times, articles appearing in the Eighth Tribe create pro and con opinions. This is good, as it shows the readers are interested in the contents of this magazine. We can not change or deny history. Austria-Hungary was a dual monarchy for many hundred of years. The last real monarch was “Ferenc József”, although Otto‘s father is recorded as the last king. There are many still living, even here in America, who served in the First World War, or before in the Hungarian Army. To them Ferenc József is (was) their king and remained their king; King of the Magyars, the wearer of St. Stephen’s Crown. Many years ago I had an occasion to visit a man like this in Bethlehem, Pa. (actually living in a small community outside the city). This patriach of the Hungarian Community, although a catholic by faith, made an equal donation to all the Hungarian churches in Bethlehem at Christmas time. The Board of Elders of my church decided to pay their respect to this man. As a new comer I was to accompany the Chief Elder. We arrived at a clean, ordinary farm house. Entering, we were greeted by the lady of the house with an old customary Hungarian greeting: ‘Isten hozta az urakat’ — God brought you, gentlemen — and was led into a room. It was like entering into an another world. There sat an old gentleman in a chair; behind him to his left and right stood the Hungarian and the American Flags; between them on the wall was a picture of a man in the dress uniform of a king. Written under it “Ferenc József — Magyarok Királya”, and the Crest of Hungary. On the other wall was the map of Hungary, as this old gentleman remembered. He had created a small part of Hungary for himself. We were treated with gracious Hungarian hospitality, THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ........................................................ Sándor E.
