Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE August, 1979 DEDICATION This magazine is dedicated to the Eighth Tribe in America, descendants of the original Seven Magyar Tribes. Whatever their faith, their familiarity with their ancestral language, or their degree of Hungarian ancestry, we address ourselves to each of them. If this reading is your first acquaintance with “THE EIGHTH TRIBE”, we hope you find it informative and enjoyable and that in time you will become one of our regular subscriber. THE EDITOR’S CORNER We are happy to announce that Mr. Tibor Flórián, distinguished writer, author and journalist, has joined our contributing editor’s group. The Eighth Tribe is honored to have Mr. Tibor Flórián on the board and we feel his contribution will enrich this magazine. # * # On behalf of the Eighth Tribe magazine, the Eighth Tribe Foundation and the Bethlen Press, we welcome all those who will come to Ligonier on the Labor Day weekend. You wiU be asked to make many decisions that will involve your church, now and in the future. The time has arrived and you cannot shrink from your DONATION TO THE EIGHTH TRIBE FOUNDATION P. O. Box 637, Ligonier, Pa. 15658 Enclosed is my (our) donation toward the establishment of a Hungarian Cultural Institute in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. $............................................................................................ Name ........................................................................................ (Husband and wife, please use first names) Address ...................................................................................... All donations will be published monthly in the EIGHTH TRIBE. All donations will be refunded if our goal is not realized. duties. Your commitment toward this magazine and the Eighth Tribe Foundation, will directly or indirectly affect your churches, individually and nationally. Most of our churches, of all faiths, have three flags standing in the church. The white flag: symbol of our Christian Faith; the Stars-and-Stripes: for our country, of which we are born or naturalized citizens; the red-white-and-green with St. Stephen’s Crown in the center: standing for our Magyar Heritage. Together these three give us our identity. Without any one of these we are nothing, just a speck in the masses of humanity . As I was reading through the old records, I came upon the minutes of a church conference, where a decision was made to publish a magazine like the Eighth Tribe, under the same name. Rev. Endre Sebestyén did publish a few issues but gave up because of lack of support from the American Hungarian Community. In 1974 the magazine appeared on the horizon once more. This time it received a little more support, but reaching its sixth year of publication hais been made possible only by the financial sacrifice of a few — those who own the Bethlen Press. The increased cost in the production, both in material and postage puts a greater burden on Bethlen Press, and these expenses cannot be absorbed any longer. The yearly subscription is eight dollars, reflecting the name of the magazine. We need an increase in the number of subscriptions to offset the expense^. The Eighth Tribe Foundation, born a year ago, also needs your attention. To have a Hungarian Cultural Institute here in Ligonier will be beneficial to the American Hungarian Community, including your churches. A CHALLENGE EXTENDED The goal of $500,000.00 and 25,000 subscriptions was set last year. A year has passed and we are far away from both goals. But God works in mysterious ways. The Eighth Tribe Foundation has received an individual commitment of a large donation provided it will be matched by others, individually or combined. A challenge has been made to our Fraternal Societies, to our churches, to all Hungarian social clubs, societies, and groups and to all American Hungarians to come forward with donations; whatever they can afford. If you cannot send a check now, a pledge will be accepted. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E. Chomoe Contributing Editors: ..........
