Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE April, 1977 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hungary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were born in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. * * * CHANGE OF ADDRESS:— We ask our readers to send in their new addresses as soon as possible, as of now we have to pay 25 cents on each address correction to the Post Office, whether the Magazine was delivered or not. # * * We ask our Canadian and other Foreign Subscribers to use International Money Orders payable in U.S. Funds, when sending in their subscriptions. THE EDITOR’S CORNER:— Spurred by the TV series “Roots”, Americans reveal great interest in tracing their family history. The rise of interest comes at a time, when a considerable lack of knowledge is found regarding one’s ancestry. For example, it is known, that one-fourth of Americans do not know what nation their father’s ancestors came from, almost half whence their mother’s family emigrated. 68 percent do not know in what year their father’s or mother’s ancestors came to America. Young adults (18-29 years old) reveal greater interest in family genealogy than older persons. This magazine cannot trace individual family background, but we can acquaint you and bring you the history of our ancestors Nation and Land and of those who emigrated to this new continent. Also try to bring the second, third and fourth generation closer to each other. We have sent out over 3,000 introductory copies to California in the month of February and March. The response was almost none, up to now only 6 replies were received. The magazine was sent to individuals, churches and societies. We asked pastors and officers of the societies to make an effort on behalf of this magazine. We are only an instrument in shaping the future of the Hungarian-American community. If this instrument is not used, it will lose its purpose. It seems we are facing a blank, unmoveable, unpenetrable wall, the Hungarian- American community fenced itself into. There are many ethnic magazines in the U.S. Some have 75, 50, 30, 25 thousand or less subscribers, we are at the bottom, when we can be amongst the leaders. * * * We would like to thank the Kalifornia Magyarság for their valuable article about The Eighth Tribe in their newspaper. We always said, that we are in no competition with the Hungarian Newspapers, and we are happy, that the Editors of the Kalifornia Magyarság realized this. * * * It’s graduation time again. If your son or daughter has recently graduated from a college, university or even from High School with honors, we’d like to recognize his or her achievement. Just send us a picture and a short biography. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ............................................................ Sándor E. Chomos Contributing Editors: ...........
