February, 1977 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 7 Magyars, whereby both the Hunno-Turkic and the Finno-Ugric origins are explainable. This theory of two-rootedness is all the more logical, as Magyar national traditions also make references to the bilingualism of Prince Árpád’s conquering Magyars, some of whom spoke primarily a Turkic language, and others primarily the Finno-Ugric Magyar. What has been said above, should make it clear that our knowledge about Magyar proto-history (the history of the period which predates the Árpádian conquest of the Carpathian Basin) is rather hazy. But scholars generally believe that the people who eventually became the Magyars went through at least four distinct periods in their ethnic and linguistic evolution. These four periods are called respectively 1.) the ■‘Uralic Period” between ca. 12,000 and 3,500 B.C.; 2.) the “Finno-Ugric Period” between ca. 3,500 and 2,000 B.C.; 3.) the “Ugor Period” between ca. 2,000 and 500 B.C.; and 4.) the “Proto-Magyar Period” between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. (These dates, of course, are very approximate.) The first of these periods saw the evolution of the common Uralic language, perhaps as a branch of the more encompassing Ural-Altaic language; the second period witnessed the fragmentation of the Uralic language and people into several branches, such as the Ob-Ugors, Permians, Volga- Finns, Baltic-Finns, etc.; the third period saw the rise of the Ugors into a separate ethnic-linguistic entity, and then their own gradual fragmentation; and the fourth period witnessed the emergence of the Proto- Magyars, partially through their separation from the rest of the Ugors, and partially through intermixing with a number of Turkic tribes in their area. It was as a result of this process that they finally appeared on the historical scene in the fifth century A.D., either under the name, or as part of a group of people known as the Onogurs (meaning ten tribes). Following this fourtli period, and therefore during the approximately four centuries before the Árpádian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 896 A.D., we can already refer to these mixture of Ugors and various Turkic elements as “Magyars.” And this can be done in spite of the fact that subsequently their language and ethnicity was further enriched by the addition of more Turkic elements, including Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, Pechenegs, Cumans and others. But now that we know the basic stages of Magyar proto-History, the next question we have to answer is: “Where did all this nation formation take place? Many scholars still hold that it happened somewhere in the forest regions of the Middle Urals, on both the European and the Asiatic side of these mountains. Allegedly it first began on the Asiatic 11 children, two grandchildren (the latter also can speak Hungarian) ; he lives in the region of this nation’s Capital, with a son attending college. Mutual friends, Elizabeth and Frank Kun, mentioned that they had met Mr. Fiiry about ten years ago and were familiar with the latter’s written works —many of which depicts his style and philosophy as being inclined toward partisanship with the average, everyday sort of people from all walks of life. The black-and-white film gives viewers brief glimpses into segments of happenings in Hungary’s history up through a portion of World War II from available material, without broad coverage of detail up to a point some decades ago—the rest remaining for future recording. —Madeline Takacs Barboe If you would like to get in touch with M.
