December, 1977 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page 5 “How about the rest of you?” turned Grandmother toward us “check it, perhaps you will all have it in the same place, after all you are one family.. !” Somewhat doubtingly though, but we all reached behind our ears. Then suddenly we all felt it! The moisture of the secret ointment, right behind our ears! “Now rub your fingers over your eyes” Grandmother said “just keep on rubbing...” We kept rubbing and rubbing our eyes with that one finger which had felt the moisture behind our ears. Then suddenly, the miracle came true! Somewhere a little silver bell began to ring. We listened, bolding our breath. Grandmother stood up from her rockin’ chair, and we all leaped to our feet, running to the door, and opening it wide. Then we just stood there, fascinated. In the middle of the living room, lit up by a hundred white candles, there stood the most beautiful Christmas tree we have ever seen! Well now, just why do you think I told you this old story today? Because I think it is high time that all of us start reaching for that wonderful ointment which was given to each of us on our very first birthday by the angel of the Lord. It is time, indeed, that we find it, and rub it over our eyes, so that we might see this world of ours as beautiful as it really is, as God made it, and learn to see each other as we really are, good, and kind, and loving... and praise the Lord with joy! MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY! ☆ ☆ DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATION OUR LADY OF HUNGARY CHURCH Perth Amboy, N. J. — October 1, 1977 A Pontifical Concelebrated Mass at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of Our Lady of Hungary Church. Those commemorating the occasion included the Most Reverend George W. Ahr, Bishop of Trenton; the Reverends Stephen G. Horvath and Raymond Attanasio, pastor and associate parish pastor, respectively; also taking part in the ceremonies was the Reverend Joseph R. Brzozowski, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Fords, New Jersey, with the Reverend Vincent Nebus as toastmaster and Reverend Michael Vincze as guest speaker at the banquet afterward. The official change of name was made in 1908 to that of Our Lady of Hungary Church (which had been formerly called the Church of the Holy Cross at an organizational meeting on September 3, 1902). A fire demolished the original structure in 1910, after which rebuilding plans quickly were made for a brick church replacement to be erected; this was completed in 1912 and is standing there today still to serve its parish members. Sunday School also was begun that same year. An additional school building was erected in 1919 but was sold in 1930. Since then, they have built schools at Cortlandt Street and Catherine Street. One large hall was dedicated in honor of the late József Cardinal Mindszenty. During 1957, the current pastor, Reverend Stephen G. Horvath had been assigned to Our Lady of Hungary Church. Renovations to the church have been made throughout the years as well as a new rectory completed in 1960. One of the oldest charter members still living today is 98-year old Mrs. Peter Chiszmar. Preparations for this festive event comprised many months of coordinated endeavors which included school children making decorations, program participation as well as church members helping in numerous plans — not to discount the tasteful cooking plus baking the renowned Hungarian honey cakes among other things! The entire occasion was an observance of achievement — enhanced by many individuals who dignified the occasion not only by their presence but also by their cooperative efforts. — Madeline Takács Barboe
