Page 2 THE EIGHTH TRIBE February, 1977 WHAT IS THE EIGHTH TRIBE? The Hungarian Nation when entering the Carpathian Basin in the 9th century A.D. was composed of seven Magyar tribes of Scythian origin. Many hundreds years later some of the people left Hungary for a newly discovered land — and this segment became the Eighth Tribe. To those who were bom in this land, speaking or not the Hungarian language, Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic or any other faith, even if only a trace of Hungarian origin in them, to these this Magazine is dedicated. The first issue of The Eighth Tribe was published April, 1974. * * * CHANGE OF ADDRESS:— We ask our readers to send in their new addresses as soon as possible, as of now we have to pay 25 cents on each address correction to the Post Office, whether the Magazine was delivered or not. * * * We ask our Canadian and other Foreign Subscribers to use Internation Money Orders payable in U.S. Funds, when sending in their subscriptions. THE EDITOR’S CORNER:— It is always a pleasure to welcome an addition to the Editorial Staff of The Eighth Tribe. This time we greet Dr. Endre Nanay from Los Angeles, Calif., co-editor of the “Kalifornia Magyarság”. He graciously accepted our request to be a contributing editor of The Eighth Tribe representing the Hungarian Community on the West Coast. The history of the Hungarian-Americans in California is so tremendously rich that it would be regretful not to preserve it for the present and future. This Editor attended youth conferences in the late 1930’s and 40’s, latter on Presbyters and Church conferences and other meetings concerning the Hungarian-American Community. Almost every year it came up as to how we could keep the new generation in the fold. The idea of a magazine like The Eighth Tribe was thrown around and many times it was accepted, but never acted upon, for there was no one to start it, no one to donate their time without making money from it. So we lost a couple of generations. Now it’s a reality. The Editorial Staff serves without any remuneration. The Bethlen Press gives its time and money to continuously publish this magazine, now going into its fourth year. We have lost over fifty precious years to bring up our children in our heritage. It’s a big responsibility to recapture all those passing years. We ask all of you in California who are receiving this magazine for the first time, that you earnestly consider joining the family of The Eighth Tribe. It is not a political or religious magazine, our common denominator is that we are of Hungarian parentage. We ask all the church leaders, pastors and elders of both Catholic and Protestant Churches, officers of Fraternal and Social Clubs to take upon themselves the responsibility to bring their members into the fold of The Eighth Tribe. This magazine is not in competition with your local “Kalifornia Magyarság”, that is there to serve you in your community in the language you understand better. The Eighth Tribe is a national effort to serve those who do not understand the Hungarian language, your children and grandchildren. We ask you to make this sacrifice with us, so this magazine fulfill the responsibility of its purpose. THE EIGHTH TRIBE Editor ........................................................... Sándor E.
