August, 1974 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page Fifteen editor's note pad To Our Readers: We regret the lateness of the second issue of “The Eighth Tribe”, hut there are certain regulations of the Post Office Department that require proof of so many subscriptions before they issue a Second Class Mailing Permit. The first issue was mailed as regular mail, and you can well imagine the cost of mailing 5,000 copies at this rate. Although we are grateful to all those who have sent in their subscriptions from all over the United States and Canada, we are disturbed that from the 20.000 copies we have distributed (5,000 through individual mailing— 15.000 sent to churches and societies) among Hungarian-Americans, only a very small percentage have shown interest. Missing are the names of many who claim to be the leaders of the Hungarian-American community, religious and laymen, ministers and church elders. Yet these were the very men who gave birth to the idea of this magazine at one of the Presbyters’ Conferences. We were warned by many that we would not have the support of the Hungarian-Americans, because they care less and less about their Hungarian origin, or caring that their children know about it. We simply will not believe this. Many confuse this magazine with other Hungarian weeklies. The Eighth Tribe is not a newspaper, we do not print news, you can read that in your local papers. The purpose of The Eighth Tribe is to inform, and to bring us closer to one another through knowledge. We received letters stating that the $8.00 fee is too high, but considering the cost involved, it is not. Presently, the way the subscriptions are coming in, it will just pay the paper and the postage for one issue monthly. We need at least 5,000 subscribers to make a twice monthly publication, this is only one percent of America’s Hungarian- American population.
