August, 1974 THE EIGHTH TRIBE Page Three UR-ISTEN was greatly angered. Piercing the Earth with His golden lance he banished ORDONG into the deep crevice made by His thrust. After the creation of the Earth was finished, UR-ISTEN reached up and broke off a small piece of the sun. From that piece He created the first man and the first woman. Since, after He had created man and women, there was still a small chunk remaining, from that He created the first horse and the first dog, so that man and woman might have true friends and faithful companions. Now it happened that one beautiful day, the first woman stepped forth from her tent There was a beautiful golden flower at the corner of the tent. The woman picked it up, wrapped it into her neckkerchief, and went to find her husband. As the man and the woman unwrapped the kerchief together, instead of finding the golden flower, a beautiful little baity boy smiled up at them. The boy called the first woman “Edes-Anyain” (my sweet mother) and he called the first man, “Edes-Apam”, (my sweet father). UR-ISTEN ordered the first son-of-man to become VILAGUGYELO, (Care-taker of the world). It was his duty to teach mankind everything that they should know. Yilagugyelo must teach mankind how to make fish nets, how to herd cattle and sheep, but he must teach them above all else, to obey the rules and laws of their Creator. When UR-ISTEN saw that everything on Earth was going well under the guidance of Yilagugyelo, the Teacher, He lay down in his big blue tent and went to sleep, leaving mankind to his own strength and resourcefulness. Vilagugyelo enriched the Earth even more, by bringing down from heaven the fairies and the dwarves, which in turn brought with them their own treasures — colorful wildflowers, song-birds, butterflies, snails and ever so many other things. Now while the Earth was doing so well, 0RDONGASSZONY was still deep down in the dark crevice of the Earth, where the anger of UR-ISTEN had thrown her. Here in the dark bowels of the Earth, she bore her evil daughter, KINCS, (Treasure), who soon began to tempt every man and woman on Earth with her gold, silver, diamonds and rubies, hidden in the dark places, under the surface of the Earth. While men blindly followed the temptations of KINCS, the crevices and caves were widened in their search for precious stones and metals. Through these new openings, all the vicious little creatures of ORDONG escaped to the surface of the Earth, causing diseases, miseries, quarrels, and wars among mankind. Hate, sickness, and many other evils began to plague the Earth so much that BOLDOGASSZONY wept day and night up there in the sky and her tears filled the sea with salt. Not even Vilagugyelo was able to help. All he could do was to teach mankind to be good, kind, honest and happy, but only a very few listened to him. Th ese few were the chosen people, the MAGYAR herdsmen, who lived with their herds and flocks on the endless grasslands. In the daytime they tended their herds. At night they looked up into the starlit sky and knew that somewhere up there, in His blue tent, UR-ISTEN was watching over the world, with Justice in His right hand, and Love in His left. On clear nights they could see the SEVEN THRESHOLDS leading the way to His heavenly tent, guarded by the shiny star of KÜSZÖB ORE, (Threshold Guard). They could see the glittering SZERUSKERT, (Farmyard) around His tent, where KASZÁS, (the Reaper) was cutting the star-grace, followed by his wife, SANTA-KATA, (Limping-Kate) who carried the supper-basket. Across the night sky, the HADAK ÚTJA, (Road of the Warriors — Milky Way), marked the way of the dead heroes into heaven. In the great chariot of the NAGY GONCOL (Ursa Major), UR-ISTEN Himself rode once in a while across the skies. When the chariot wheels rumbled and the horses’ hooves struck a star, thunder roared and lightning flashed. Sometimes angered by ORDONG’S deeds, URISTEN hurled ISTENNYILA, (arrows of Gods lightning) down to the Earth. Occasionally the MENNYKO, (stone of heaven), which filled the bed of the heavenly wagon, fell out, wherever the tvheels of the chariot hit a hump, and these hit the Earth with mighty thunder. On quiet and peaceful summer nights, BOLDOGASSZONY descended to Earth in her own buggy, the KIS GONCOL, (Ursa Minor), bringing healing herbs and good thoughts to mankind. Since KINCS, the daughter of ORDONG was able to turn her many evil servants loose on Earth, creating war, hate, misery and thousands of diseases, Vilagugyelo, the great Teacher of Mankind, was forced into hiding. No One knows his hiding place. No one, that is, except the oldest of the Herdsmen, the very TÁLTOS. He is the only one who knows the secret, and before he dies, with his last breath, the TÁLTOS hands this secret over to the next in line. Thus the whereabouts of VILAGUGYELO,
