Cultural Center After a loooong cold winter, Spring is here! How nice to see the budding trees, flowers and hear the joyful sounds of the many birds, welcoming these nice warmer days! We here at the Cultural Center have been busy with various programs throughout these last months. The Bethlen Home’s annual Hungarian Independence Day Commemorative program was held on March 15 in the Dining Hall. Our guest speaker was Rev. Ilona Komjáthy from the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Pittsburgh. Her thoughts were well received by our many guests. Also participating in the program was resident Rev. Nicholas Novak, our Chaplains - Rev. Levente Molnár and Rev. Joseph Posta. Magdi Bertalan recited the poem Maygar Vagyok. We thank everyone who attended. Himes Tojás - Egg decorating demonstrations went extremely well. We are happy to be passing this tradition on to others. We thank The First Hungarian Church of Homestead and Calvary United Methodist Church in Ligonier for sponsoring our classes. The large group of young people at the Ligonier Library had the chance to create eggs using three different techniques. We are sorry that there was not enough time to go everywhere we were invited - every effort will be made next year to start the classes earlier. We had a wonderful visit with Sr. M Edith Nemeth from the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer, first here at the Home and then a wonderful tour of her PenView Arts Center in Elizabeth, PA. Sister, an amazing artist, runs the center herself, gives classes in weaving, calligraphy, painting (just to name a few) AND finds time to create beautiful pieces herself! Sister Edith is 70 some years young. She is truly inspirational, and we look forward to working with her in the months to come. We say good-by to a very special resident of The Bethlen Home - Rev. Stephen Kovács passed away March 17. As a resident, Pista-bácsi participated in Cultural Center activities as often as he could. He was a very special, well loved member of our community Isten Veled a Viszontlátásig—Pista-bácsi. We send our condolences to his devoted wife, Irenkinéni and to the entire Kovács family. HAPPY MOTHER’S AND FATHER’S DAY TO EVERYONE!! MAY 1ST JOIN HANDS DAY AND MAY DAY PICNIC Join Hands Day develops youth and adult relationships through neighborhood volunteering. It helps restore trust and confidence across the generations and makes life better in neighborhoods and communities. This year the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, along with its Branches and The Bethlen Home Community, will join with the National Fraternal Congress of Americas’ member societies and once again participate in Join Hands Day. A group of wonderful young people from The Valley Youth Network have been invited to work with us to help Ligonier Valley residents with work around their houses. The hard work will be followed by our annual May Day picnic. The volunteers will join The Bethlen Home, Ligonier Gardens and our Cottage residents and guests for some delicious Hungarian Bogrács Gulyas prepared by our own Lajos Szép. Everyone is welcome to come and JOIN HANDS WITH US and then enjoy the picnic. Memorial donations to The Bethlen Home Cultural Center in memory of Mr. Joseph Geza Kecskemethy. A strong supporter, Mr. Kecskemethy had been looking forward to helping plan the future of The Bethlen Cultural Center. In tribute to him the following people have donated to the Center.
