THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER! RESIDENT NEWS The theme for the month of August is "The Sky's the Limit" in honor of National Aviation Day. Here are some of the things we have planned for the month: 1st 6th 7th 10th 26th 27th Catholic Mass at 11:00 a.m. Bible Study at 10:00 a.m. Music by Kevin Selecki Bingo at 11:00 a.m. Resident Council Milk Shake Party WEATHER OR NOT HOT. HOT. HOT. HOT. Traditionally the hottest month of the year, August is sometimes referred to as the "Dog Days" month. Do you know how this expression originated? Answer: According to Roman theory, the dog-star or Sirius, rising with the sun, added to its heat. Dog Days (called caniculares dies) bore the combined heat of the dog-star and the sun. AUGUST FUN FACT August got its name from Augustus Caesar - the adopted son of Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. Originally August had only 30 days, but Augustus wanted his month to have as many days as July, which was named for Julius. To satisfy his ego, Augustus stole a day from February. We have displayed a bulletin board by our downstairs water fountain. The board will have memos posted and anything of concern to the residents. Anyone who has news they would like to share with everyone, feel free to give the news to the Activity Director to be placed on the board. We would like to take time out and thank Wallace Mundell, one of our residents, and Bob Stutsman, his son-in-law for building the shed out back, which we purchased for storing lawn equipment and various other things. The two men have been working really hard to have the shed up and looking nice. The shed will be a great addition to our facility. We just wanted to thank both men for all the hard work they have been doing and to let them know it is greatly appreciated. One resident, Marg Wahlrobe, would like to share with the rest of you a little bit about her son. Tom Wahlrobe of Bloomington Minn, has been accepted as a member of Eden Prairie, a 55 member concert band. Tom is a Latrobe native and also the son of the late Tom Wahlrobe, The band will spend ten days in China, playing five concerts. They will acquaint the Chinese with all types of American Music. Tom is a graduate of Adrian College in Michigan and has a Masters Degree from Farleigh/Dickinson. Along with being a member of the Eden Prairie Concert Band, Tom is also a member of Bloomington Symphony and a member of its board of directors. On top of all his other accomplishments, Tom has also authored a book on employee benefits. Several families and visitors have asked what they can do for the residents of Ligonier Gardens. One suggestion that immediately comes to mind is "Volunteer"! We are always looking for volunteers. Volunteers are always a welcome addition to any facility and are needed to help with projects such as bingo, games and outings. If you would like further information on being a volunteer, please contact our Activity Director, Jennifer Reese at 724-238-3517 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. We also are working on a few projects. One is to be able to increase the amount of entertainment that is currently being provided to our residents and the other is a fish tank and stand. Since both of these projects are costly to the facility, your monetary donations are always welcome. Our residents would both enjoy and benefit from your generosity. Please make checks payable to Ligonier Gardens. Thank you.
