Since 1996 is the year of the Summer Olympics, the Activity Department thought it would be fun to have our own Senior Olympics which was held during National Nursing Home Week in May. Friday concluded the Senior Games with the closing ceremony of fireworks and award and ribbon presentations to the winners and participants of each event. A winners' platform was also built. Many "Thanks" to Aldin Woods for donating the platform and to Mario Battaglia for putting it together. We appreciate your kindness and hard Work. I would like to "Thank" the Residents for being such good sports in participating. You were all winners of the gold in our eyes. Bottom picture from left to right, Residents Helen Miller, Verna Fry (standing) and Jennie Luther after receiving their ribbons for Distance Throw. Each day featured a number of different events. Monday was the opening ceremony in which Residents gathered out on our first floor patio to watch the passing and the lighting of the torch which was done by Residents Helen Paul and Marie Seiling. After the torch was lit, a balloon launch was held to kick off the event, followed by a water balloon toss which was great fun for the Residents. I think the Residents enjoyed getting the Activity Staff soaked more than anything. A variety of Senior Games was held throughout the week. Some of the events planned were wheelchair races, bedpan and mop relay and urinal toss, to name a few. Needless to say, the Games brought many laughs and fun. Many "Thanks" to Jean Sears of the Activity Staff for bringing in her video equipment to film the events. During mid week a cookout was held for Residents and Staff featuring entertainment by the Blair Elton Band. The event was sponsored by the McCabe Family in memory of former Resident Mary Peffer.
