JRßötbßttt antr ß>tnf{ Profile by Resident Susan Wargo Jay Marrietta - Resident Jay was born and raised in Connellsville, PA. He also informs us that his grandfather was mayor of the town at one time. He is of German and Italian descent. The name Marrietta is derived from a queen named Marie Etta. He is a veteran of World War Two, serving in the artillery and traveling on the European Tour. During this time, he said he was able to travel to France, Italy and Germany. He and his family settled in Ligonier, PA and Harrisburg, PA. One of his favorite hobbies when he was younger was playing baseball and football with his children. We hear you were a great outfielder in your day! Since Jay came to the Bethlen Home, he has been active in helping out with woodworking crafts as well as ceramics. We enjoy and appreciate your hard work. He is also an active member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. JVctürítjj JMigljítgljts The following poem is dedicated to our residents, who I’m sure can recall many fond memories of the front porch swing, perhaps when they would have Sunday get-togethers, or when they courted! THE OLD FRONT PORCH When spring blossomed into summer And days grew long and hot, The old front porch and wicker chairs Became the gathering spot Of neighbors and friends who came to call And sit in the soothing shade, To talk over what was happening And sip cool lemonade. And as the shadows lengthened, The crickets came about. And evening sounds then took the place Of the children’s playful shouts. Friends drifted away till dinner was done, Then often again returned To while away more hours As the lamplights softly burned. A summertime enjoyment, That ended when fall would appear. . . A treasure of fond memory To store for a future year.
