Christmas returns, as it always does, with its assurance that life is good. It is the time to bring forth good news; the message of hope, the message of support. His coming means much more than just the beauty of the story of Jesus’ birth. His coming relates to us and to our world. It means, we have to grow into the patient and wise maturity of compassionate love and caring spirit, a healer of hurts, a messenger of good news and an ambassador of hope for those who are wounded, sorrowful and hopeless. Robert Schuller, in one of his books, tells of attending an International Psychiatric Convention in Madrid, Spain. The seminar was about, “Human Values and Psychotherapy”. One speaker stressed on the value of faith: “Build faith into the lives of your patients. Nothing is more powerful than the power of belief”. The second speaker, from Germany, said: “Go out, doctors, and build hope into people”. The third speaker was a Peruvian therapist who concluded the program, saying: “Show people love-- real non-judgmental love. It is the most powerful healing force in the world”. Here are three foundations on which Christians have relied since the coming of Christ: 1. “Build faith into the lives of your patients”: Yes, we all need faith in this day of stress and tension, and more than just a shallow faith, the kind that gives depth and meaning to existence. And building faith is done in many ways: on the occasion beside the hospital or nursing home bed, in the home and during crises, anywhere where life reaches out for a reason, for an answer. 2. “Build hope into people”: How many are seeking for a word of hope. Life and its battles have worn us down. The burdens and pains of life are closing in upon us . . . 3. “Show people love”: The world never outgrows its need for love. How many are beaten down by this loveless society. Who is reaching out to them with love, understanding and help? These are some questions to face at this Christmas time. How far have we advanced in God’s divine program? These are simple, practical ingredients of the gospel. Let us all dispense them courageously, consistently and with challenge. “For God so loved the world . . It relates to us and our world. He intervenes and participates in human affairs. Through you and me, through us! May the grace of God which has appeared, fill your heart at this Christmas. Let the beauty of His redeeming grace and the glory of His Holy Spirit bea blessing to you: residents, to all departments' dedicated “ambassadors”, family members, physicians and volunteers, at this Christmas and the coming new year! 1992 HRFA CONVENTION The 34th Convention of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America was held on September 21-24, 1992, in the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Rockville, Maryland. The 44 delegates, Board members and guests heard the three National Officers and Advisors’ four years’ report. Afterthe regular business meetings, three National Officers were elected for the next four year period. They were: George Dózsa, President; Endre Csornán, Secretary; and Suzanne Virgulák, Treasurer. The Bethlen Home extends congratulations and best wishes for the three newly elected officers of the Federation. WORDS TO LIVE BY by John Greenleaf Whittier Somehow, not only for Christmas But all the long year through, The joy that you give to others Is the joy that comes back to you.
