A Special Day of Love When February 14th rolls around each year, we seem to find that extra spot in our hearts to tell our loved ones, sweethearts and good friends how much we love them and what they mean to us. Valentine's Day is also one of the most popular holidays for the retail businesses. More candy and flowers are sold on this day than any other. So if you have that special someone you would like to whisper those three special words to, Valentine's Day is the day to do it. Residents, keep an eye out on the bulletin board for the special Valentine's Day activities such as the Sweethearts Dinner, King and Queen of Hearts Contest, etc. Details will be posted closer to the time. The following is a poem that will bring back some sweet memories. A VALENTINE by: Cleo King How sweet to get a valentine of plain or fancy art. A rose of pink and violets too, or satin covered heart. But more than beauty or design, We prize the words to say The sender's love comes with the gift in quite the wannest way. We like to know that someone canes, that someone wants to do The kindly deed that makes us feel well loved and happy, too. So why not give expression then, to love for friends so dear, Not only on one certain day but many times a year? Our valentines may be a smile, a cheerful word or two, A helping hand, a tender glance, that signals, "I love you." And if we often take this time to give these friendly signs, The world will soon be brightened by our daily valentines. Social SerWct Comer By: Pat Armel What do nursing home residents consider to be their most important needs? Clifford Bennett, PhD came up with this list from a study that he made. The list is in the order of their importance, as determined by the residents themselves. 1. Possessions (having one's own belongings with one). 2. Family (seeing one's family). 3. Freedom (to move about and do things). 4. Privacy (having the option of being alone). 5. Independence (doing things for oneself). 6. Making decisions (deciding for oneself what one wants). 7. Choice of food (being able to have a say about what one eats). 8. Friends (seeing one's friends). 9. Choice of what to wear (having enough clothes available from which to choose what one will wear). 10. Religion (participating in one's religion). 11. Control over own financial affairs (knowledge of and a say in one's own financial affairs). 12. Communication with people outside the home (freedom to contact people outside the home). 13. Recognition (others interest in one). 14. Community activities (being involved with community life). 15. Shopping and buying (being able to buy things). 16. Accomplishment (to achieve something). It is revealing that possessions would be considered number one in priority and accomplishment last
