Many times this is the first outing of summer when all the family members are able to get together. The following poems will bring back some fond memories. Fireworks by: Virginia Blanck Moore Fireworks, fireworks! Oh, what a joy For the wide-eyed girl and the wide-eyed boy who watch a flaming ball Burst into spray, A shower of sparks Making night like day. Red sparks and green sparks And silver sparks glow, To be greeted by a rapturous And long-drawn, "Oooooh!" Fireworks, fireworks, Lighting the sky- What a glorious ending To a Fourth of July! Fathers by: Alice Leedy Mason A father is someone precious and dear, Whose faith in your efforts eliminates fear. You earn his respect; He's example and guide. When the going gets rough, He stands by your side. A father can help you with everyday things. He can teach you to whistle, build rubber tire swings. If you ask his opinion, he'll give you the facts. He can teach you construction with a hammer and tacks. A father knows problems may not be what they seem. He's a very good listener, believes in your dreams. He shows little interest in fashion or wealth; Has a good sense of humor (he can laugh at himself). A father is friendship in faded blue jeans. He's a shoulder to cry on, the man with the means. He has faith in tomorrow and strength from above. In words spoken plainly, A father is love! A Special Day by: Alice Leedy Mason The Fourth of July was a special day With excitement everywhere, Long before ten the high school band Marked time in the village square. The mayor waved as he led the parade Riding proud in a big, open car. Next were the soldiers...veterans all, From the Spanish-American War. Eagle scouts carried our country's flag There were nurses and gold star mothers... Then the V.F.W. with its marching band, The National Guard and others. Here and there a majorette appeared Twirling a shiny baton. The children marched or watched in groups Till the big parade was gone. The crowd dispersed to meet in the park For programs, picnics and play. Our country's flag in hand and in heart... The Fourth was a special day!
