Ptpical Citera pp Corner SAVE YOIJR RACK National "Save Your Back" week is October 22nd - 28th. Your back works 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Every time you sit, stand, lift or lie down you are using your back. Eight out of ten Americans will have a back problem. The disability from back pain can affect every aspect of your life. The symptoms from back problems may prevent you from doing your job, performing simple daily activities, exercising and enjoying a full, happy life. They may even create emotional tension in your family and social life. Most back problems are not the result of a single injury. With a few exceptions, back problems are the result of months or even years of stress to the spine. Most back problems are due to: (1.) poor posture, (2.) poor body mechanics, (3.) stressful working and living habits, (4.) loss of flexibility, and (5.) a general decline of physical fitness. H. Duane Saunders M.S. P.T. details in his self-help manual "Managing Back Pain" several principles of proper back care: 1. Maintain the normal curves of the back. 2. Plan your movements ahead of time. 3. Ask for assistance when appropriate. 4. Do not remain in one position for extended periods of time. 5. Maintain a wide, stable base while standing and lifting. 6. Pivot your feet, don't twist your back. 7. Keep your stomach muscles firm while lifting and participating in daily activities. 8. Keep items close to the body when lifting or carrying. 9. Lift with your legs, not with your back. 10. When in doubt ask your therapist or doctor. Other preventive measures include eliminating excess body weight, strengthening neglected back muscles, and adopting good posture habits at work, home and play. A problem back can be improved by increasing flexibility and strength in the muscles and joints that support your back. A back exercise program 15 minutes 3-5 times a week is all it takes to maintain a healthy back. ftoetrp Corner By Resident Alma Edith Woods MY YOUNC, FRIEND I heard a knock this morning. I opened the door to see. There he was a sturdy young lad standing with his eyes full of glee.... He held his hands wide open and what do you think I see? The biggest of three red apples he had picked and saved for me. I am thankful for this sturdy young lad who loves and cares for me. May he always be welcome to pick fruit from my favorite apple tree.
